As part of Seven Sensor Solutions’ ongoing commitment to innovation and development, a new innovative sensor has been launched! Seven Cloud system (3S-CS-MB).
While heavy cloud cover can significantly reduce solar panel power production. Studies have observed up to a 66.75% decrease in power output under dense cloud conditions compared to clear skies, which makes the cloud a vital parameter that affects the efficiency of the PV panels; thus, we developed our cloud sensor mainly to measure the Cloud Ratio.
What Is the Seven Cloud Sensor?
The SEVEN Cloud Sensor consists of two Irradiance Sensors; one placed permanently in the shade along with a shading band, a mounting plate, and a mounting profile. and the other fully exposed to sunlight.
Advantages for System Installers and Operators
Detecting the proportion of cloud cover enables analysis on whether the solar panels should remain in a fixed position or be adjusted according to the sun’s position. This allows users to take the necessary actions based on cloudiness levels to improve energy efficiency. It is designed especially for use in Tracker Solar Energy Systems and thus helps prevent energy loss in tracker systems on cloudy and overcast days. On such days, the optimal panel position is horizontal to maximize the capture of diffuse irradiance from all directions. This approach reduces unnecessary tracker movement and optimizes energy output under low direct irradiance conditions.
Working Principle
According to the sensor’s measurement principle, one irradiance sensor is continuously shaded by the shading band to measure diffuse irradiance in accordance with IEC 61724 standards, while the other sensor is installed in a way that no shading is applied, thereby measuring the Plane of Array Irradiance (POA). Based on the ratio of these two irradiance values, the cloud coverage percentage (Cloudiness Ratio) over the sky is calculated.
Furthermore, the sensor will be connected via Modbus RTU protocol to a data logger or SCADA system.
Installation Guidelines
- The sensor should be mounted on the Shadow Tracker Sensor arm, which is designed to rotate in sync with the tracking system’s direction and tilt angle.
- To ensure accurate readings, avoid installing the sensor near any heat sources that could affect irradiance measurements.
